PAWNMASTER & CHECKMASTER FAQ

1) Inventory & Pawn Labels do not print correctly or dot matrix printer advances a full 11". It is very important to get the correct printer driver installed in Windows for your particular printer model. Once you have the driver installed, you will need to change the printer driver to a custom paper size for any of the following printing you will be doing.
Dot Matrix Printers:
Inventory & Pawn Labels     3.5" X 1" (350 Width X 100 Length .01 inches)
Jewelry Labels 3.5" X 0.5" (350 Width X 50 Length .01 inches)
5.5" Form     8.5" X 5.5" (850 Width X 550 Length .01 inches)
7" Form     8.5" X 7" (850 Width X 700 Length .01 inches)

Make sure "Unprintable area" is set to zero. A lot of printer drivers have 250 by default.

How to create custom paper sizes:

Windows 98/ME. Click Start. Go to settings. Click on printers. Right-Click on the printer, choose properties. Choose custom paper size on the paper tab and set the according values (above.)

Windows NT/2000. Click Start. Go to settings. Click on printers. Then chose File | Server Properties. You can create a new ‘form’ here using above values. After creating form, you need to set printing preference of the printer that will be using the custom paper size or ‘form.’ Right-Click on the printer, choose properties. Look for ‘Printing preferences.’ Printer drivers vary from here. You will need to change the default paper to your custom form. Margins zero.

2) Backup/Restore Issues. Can only be run from your server. It is recommended to backup to a zip drive or another hard drive everyday. Standard floppy disks are not usable. The backup consists of two files: ‘pmdatabak.dat’ & ‘pmpicsbak.dat’. These files are stored on c:\ in addition to the folder you specify in system setup.

To restore a backup, browse to "\pawnmaster\support" folder with Windows Explorer and double click "mdfrestore.vbs". Follow the on screen instructions.

3) Proper Startup & Shutdown procedures. We recommend shutting down your system every day. On a network, your Server computer must be on and logged into Microsoft Networking before starting any workstations. This is very important. Again, make sure server is up and running before starting any workstations.

4) Screens are cut off at the bottom and right. Make certain that your monitor's resolution is set to a minimum of 800 x 600. To determine your current setting, RIGHT-Click your desktop (prior to opening any programs being opened) and from the popup menu, select 'Properties'. Click on the "Settings" tab. At the bottom-right on the form is the current screen or monitor resolution.

5) Lock-ups Many things can cause a system to lock-up or hang. Hit CTRL-ALT-DELETE only as a last resort! Call Data Age technical support if possible before hitting CTRL-ALT-DELETE. Many more problems can be created by abruptly shutting down system.

6) What is the new ‘MSSQLServer’ Icon on the task bar? Your main computer, also known as a Server, should always have that icon. This is the database program (Microsoft SQL Server) that stores all of your PawnMaster information for your system.

7) Why does TCP/IP Protocol need to be installed on my network? Microsoft SQL Server requires TCP/IP networking for communication between computers.

8) Error loading printer driver. If you are trying to print to a network printer and you get this error, check your print server’s share name of the printer. PawnMaster will have problems printing to a printer if there is a space in the printer’s share name. Windows ME will automatically create shares and sometimes uses spaces in the name.

9) %$ on labels ? This prints on labels in Windows 2000 and Windows NT when the incorrect fonts are installed. To correct this problem you need to go into the control panel and open the fonts folder and then drag the bcc128 font onto the desktop, then drag it back into the fonts folder this will re-register the font. Then windows will use it and the problem will be fixed.

10) When trying to print a Pawn ticket you get error "Subscript is outside detail range" This happens when the number of periods on the pawn ticket is not equal to the number of periods in system info. Go into system info and adjust the period.

11) When trying to open the cash drawer in Windows it does not open" For the cash drawer to open in windows the default printer must be set to the same LPT port the cash drawer is hooked to and the printer must be online. Also confirm that the electronic cash drawer is selected in sys info and the proper opening characters are used, example: CHR(20)+CHR(20)

for DOS

1) Will Data Age continue to provide support for the DOS version of PawnMaster?:

YES. Data Age will continue to provide you with highly qualified technical support on your PawnMaster 2000 (DOS) Version! All registered software products from Data Age that are supported will require a Customer Care Agreement for that product at the licensed location. Customer Care Agreements are available from Data Age at some of the most affordable prices in the industry. Data Age has been servicing and supporting your industry for over 14 years and you can count on us keeping your business running smoothly with continued support in the future.

2) Do I still need a support contract if I never have to call you?:

YES. In the unfortunate incident that you do need our services and your business is down because of some type of computer failure, it is critical that a contract be in place so that you get immediate assistance in getting your system back up and running. In these incidents, time is money and downtime is costly. Remember, it is never a question of "if" your system will go down, but "when". If a support contract is not in place, you will be faced with getting paperwork shipped overnight to you and then it would need to be shipped overnight back to us. That downtime alone could cost you more than the annual maintenance contract alone. Not to mention that there is much more to a support contract than the actual support. These support contracts insure that Data Age will be there for you in the future. It insures that future development is continued on products that benefit your business. After all, the reason you are not calling for support on a daily basis is that your quality products are being developed from high end programmers that understand your industry and will always be on staff because of this residual income.

3) Error #15, Not a database file: One or more database files has been corrupted. Exit out of PawnMaster. Start the PawnMaster program. At the System Password type DAFILECK. You will see a menu that will list all of the database files. Type the number(s) of the files that are marked "NO", one at a time until they all read "YES". When completed, rebuild all indexes, exit the program and run PawnMaster. If you still get an error, contact your distributor. If file cant be fixed they might need to run Norton Utilities (Ver 8 for DOS) FILEFIX. A system set up by Data Age may have the FILEFIX utility in the \UTIL directory. NOTE: To repair files in the prac directory go into the backdoor and press cd to change to the prac directory then select files from the menu and repair files as normal.

9) Monitor is not working: Check to see that the power light is on. Verify the power cable is plugged into the back of the monitor and into your power source. If the power light is on and you still have no image, check the brightness and contrast buttons on the monitor. Be sure the cable coming from the rear of your monitor is securely plugged into the computer. If it still does not work, contact your hardware distributor.

10) "Not ready reading Drive A:" Error: There is no disk in the A: drive, the disk or the disk drive may be bad, or the disk could be in the B: drive (in which case you would type B:INSTALL). Try a different disk. If you still get this error, contact you hardware distributor.

12) Gun Log printing problems: Run the Gun log Integrity feature and print any errors (through UTILITY MENU, then UTILITY SUB MENU). If the error is a missing entry, we need to send a "gunfix" disk.

13) Error 114, "Index does not match database file" This is common when system has been abruptly shut down. Solution: Copy *.cdx from \PAWNMAST\PRAC or *.cdx from disk 5 of ver 12 set. Make sure to rebuild indexes.
